As the world continues to grapple with the death Saturday (Aug. 25) of Senator John McCain after a fierce battle with brain cancer, it’s his 106-year-old mother that currently remains in the hearts of so many.

Because no one should ever have to bury their child.

Hearts aren’t built for things like that.

Yet, in fact, that’s what Roberta McCain finds herself currently going through. During an interview with People Magazine, a close family friend says that Roberta is “incredibly proud” of her son. “Roberta was his biggest supporter and the leader of his fan club,” the friend tells the magazine. “She was incredibly proud of him. His mommy loved him. He knew that.”

And despite her age, she remains strong.

“She is all there, mentally, and is still going strong at 106,” the friend tells People about Roberta, who knew that her son was very ill. “She outlived her 81-year-old son. That tells you a lot. But it’s a tough blow to bury your child. I can only imagine what she’s going through.”

Roberta was not only a supporter of Senator McCain personally but also professionally, making frequent appearances with him during his 2008 presidential campaign.

“Johnny is going to be the president of the United States and he’s going to keep the traditions … and the standards high,” she said during one fund-raiser. “All we want is a world where we can raise our children, have a chance at property and happiness.”
