Stars React to Death of Actor John Witherspoon

Actor John Witherspoon passed away on Tuesday at the age of 77.  The cause of death has not yet been revealed.

His family took to Twitter to confirm the news of his death. “It is with deep sadness we have to tweet this, but our husband and father John Witherspoon has passed away,” the statement read. “He was a Legend in the entertainment industry, and a father figure to all who watched him over the years. We love you ‘POPS’ always and forever.”

Born John Weatherspoon, before changing his name to Witherspoon, the 77-year-old was one of eleven siblings. He began his career as a model prior to leaning toward comedic roles. As a stand up comedian, John started on The Richard Pryor Show in 1977 and  went on to star in many memorable movie and television roles.

Best known for his portrayal of Ice Cube’s dad in the films Friday,  Next Friday and Friday After Next,  John also starred in House Party, Boomerang and The Ladies Man. Television also saw the actor shine in roles on  The Tracy Morgan Show, Living Single, The Wayans Brothers and Black-ish.

An outpouring of love and condolences came from his fellow actors, who remembered the legendary actor with loving words.

Marlon Wayans shared his pain in a lengthy post on Instagram saying in part, “I’m sad. Broken. Hurt.. yet extremely grateful to God that i got to spend 5 years of my life working with one of the funniest sweetest wisest humblest loving man @johnnywitherspoon you were my tv dad and my mentor and my friend. I miss you already. Something don’t feel right. This is heavy on my heart.”

He went on to say,  “I miss already…. hope your dancing in heaven with ugly white shoes on. “Pops pops sugar pops”.

“The world has lost a true comedy legend and all around genuine soul, who paved the way for so many of us to be able to do what we love,” wrote Martin Lawrence. “My deepest condolences to John’s family. I know he’s already up there makin everyone laugh.”

“My dad, my grandpa, my comedic inspiration! I love you Spoons! Rest In Paradise, King,” Regina King Tweeted.

“I’m devastated over the passing of John Witherspoon. Life won’t be as funny without him,” Ice Cube wrote.

“When they say OG and inspiration… that’s Johnny Witherspoon. One of my early heroes and a beautiful person. My prayers are with the family! Love you!,” added Sinbad.

“Farewell, sir. Thanks for all the smiles + all the laughter. We needed you and we celebrate you. #JohnWitherspoon,” wrote Ava DuVernay.
