When a parent loses a child unexpectedly, there is no magical amount of time in which the pain will go away. In fact, chances are that the pain will simmer for the rest of your life. Just ask John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston.
The famous couple lost their son Jett in 2009 after an accident in which the 16-year-old had hit his head on a bathtub after suffering a seizure while on a family vacation. Preston recognized what would have been Jett’s 27th birthday in an emotional Instagram message on Friday (April 5.)
“To my sweet love, Jett,” she wrote alongside a black and white pic of her and Travolta kissing their son on the cheek and a hashtag referencing the fact that April is Autism Awareness Month. “You are in our hearts forever. I send love to all of the beautiful autistic children and the wonderful people who love them. May we all shine and grant love and respect to children with special needs.“
In recent years, the couple have often spoke out about the affects of autism, a condition that their son grappled with throughout his short life. Jett also battled Kawasaki Syndrome since he was 2 years old, along with other health conditions such as asthma.
Travolta and Preston share a daughter, Ella Bleu, born in 2000. Following the death of Jett, the couple later welcomed a son, Benjamin in 2010.
“Certainly having little Ben has been a beautiful kind of glue for us to rebound after tremendous loss,” Travolta once told Good Morning America.
