With eight laps to go in the 2015 Xfinity race at Daytona International Speedway, the moment that Samantha Busch had always worried about…happened. Her husband Kyle Busch had found himself in the middle of the ‘big one,’ his car sliding across the infield and going head-on into the infield wall before stopping in a crumpled mess.

“I have just been more nervous about Daytona since that accident,” Samantha recently told One Country about the accident that left her husband dealing with multiple broken bones.

“That accident was a very big wake up call for me. No matter how safe NASCAR makes these cars, accidents are going to happen. So yes, I say a lot more prayers at Daytona.”

And as her and her husband prepare to walk out on the starting grid at the Daytona 500 come Sunday (Feb. 17,) Samantha admits that she often finds herself a tad sick to her stomach hours before this particular race.

But there is one silver lining.

“Kyle never gets scared,” says Samantha. “He’s just never afraid. And really, I don’t want to be afraid. I mean, I’ve seen cars barrel roll down the track and the driver walks out and is ok. That’s what I try to remember.”

Indeed, both Samantha and Kyle simply try to focus on just one thing, and that’s getting the brand new season off to the very best of starts, both personally and professionally.

“The off-season just goes so fast,” Samantha explains. “This is my 11th full year on the road and it still takes me a while to get back into the swing of things. I usually don’t get comfortable until after (NASCAR’S) West Coast swing (of races.) I mean, I can’t tell you how many times I have [gone] from the motor home to the grocery store getting things like toothpaste and Q-tips this week,” she said with a laugh.

It’s this carefree attitude that certainly helps Samantha get through the often stressful race, which is easily the biggest race of the NASCAR season.

“We often joke that we usually leave Daytona on a wrecker,” chuckles Samantha. “Kyle just doesn’t do awesome at this place. But who knows? Maybe this is the year that all of that changes.”
