We’ve gained a lot of incredibly talented entertainers from reality competition shows like “American Idol” and “The Voice,” and it seems that with every season, the talent grows even more remarkable. “Idol” judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Richie can testify to that after the March 10 auditions when Madison Vandenburg sat down at the piano.
The 16-year-old from Cohoes, New York gave a compelling cover of Dan + Shay’s “Speechless” and the song’s title was almost an indicator of the judge’s reaction to her earthy, yet ethereal and effortless vocal that was much more mature than her age reflected.
Earning a standing ovation, Lionel jokingly demanded that the young lady confirm her age saying, “Don’t lie to me,” and she is, indeed, 16. He then told her, “Do you know what you just did? You rendered us speechless to the point where Katy is showing me goosebumps on her arm.”
Katy added, “It’s my first goosebumps. I really thought I had lost all feeling for some reason. I’m so glad that you gave me back a pulse.” And she also said, “I think you’re as good as Kelly Clarkson. You could be the next Kelly Clarkson. You’re a massive star.”
Luke then chimed in, “Katy said it. I’m witnessing the next Kelly Clarkson.”
Of course, Madison was given a golden ticket to Hollywood, but the judges went a bit further and declared that she could win season 17 of the hit show. There are still two more nights of televised auditions before the show heads to Hollywood, though. But it is hard to deny this young lady’s astounding and abundant talent.
We’ll be watching!
