Beckett is the son of Melissa and her ex, Julie Cypher, who made headlines when they revealed that the baby was conceived via sperm donation from friend and rock star David Crosby.
Later that evening, Melissa spoke out about the loss of her son, confirming that he struggled with drug addiction.
“Today I joined the hundreds of thousands of families who have lost loved ones to opioid addiction,” she wrote in a statement. “My son Beckett, who was just 21, struggled to overcome his addiction and finally succumbed to it today. He will be missed by those who loved him, his family and friends. My heart is broken. I am grateful for those who have reached out with condolences and I feel their love and sincere grief.”
She continued, “We struggle with what else we could have done to save him, and in the end we know he is out of the pain now. I will sing again, soon. It has always healed me,” she concluded.
The former couple welcomed their son in 1998. They also share daughter Bailey. In addition, Melissa also shared twins Johnnie Rose and Miller Steven with ex, Tammy Lynn Michaels.
Our hearts go out to Melissa and her family at this difficult time.
