The rumor mill is abuzz with news about casting for the new, live-action Rob Marshall-directed version of The Little Mermaid.

Variety is reporting that Melissa McCarthy’s name is at the top of the list to play the villain we love to hate, Ursula, the villainous sea witch who offers Ariel an offer to trade her voice for a pair of human legs. Now, It’s always possible that the two-time Academy Award nominee might not take the role as these casting decisions are just in the early discussion stages..

The Little Mermaid follows in the line of Disney animated movies being turned into live-action features such as Aladdin, The Lion King, Dumbo, Beauty and the Beast,  The Jungle Book and Christopher Robin

Should McCarthy choose to accept the part, she would have to display her singing chops, singing songs from the original and some new songs written by Disney superstar himself Alan Menken, as well as Moana’s songwriter and Hamilton sensation Lin-Manuel Miranda, who will join forces on the film.

But singer/rapper Lizzo isn’t having it. Apparently, McCarthy has some competition for the role. Lizzo let the Twitterverse know she wants the role with her recent tweet saying, “I’M URSULA. PERIOD. @Disney.”

Ursula isn’t the only part still to be cast. Zendaya is rumored to play the red-headed temptress Ariel. But Lindsay Lohan threw her hat in the ring with a now deleted post that said, “I will sing again, as #ariel #thelittlemermaid,” she wrote on Instagram.

How can we be part of this world?
