Miley Cyrus Debuts New Tattoo During Emotional ‘VMA’ Performance (WATCH)

Just days after her husband Liam Hemsworth filed for divorce, Miley Cyrus stepped on the MTV Video Music Awards stage with a new song, a new attitude and a new tattoo.

According to PEOPLE, the new tattoo could be seen directly on her left bicep and was emblazoned with the words “My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free,” which is a lyric from the song “The Thing,” from the music group Pixies.

And while the tattoo spoke volumes, so did the emotion that Cyrus exhibited as she performed her new song “Slide Away,” which seems to tell a story awfully similar to the real-life one she is going through right now. Dressed in a tight black mini dress and a wet looking hair style, Cyrus kept things fairly subdued during the breakup ballad.

“Once upon a time, it was paradise / Once upon a time, I was paralyzed / Think I’m gonna miss these harbor lights / But it’s time to let it go / Once upon a time, it was made for us / Woke up one day, it had turned to dust / Baby, we were found, but now we’re lost / So it’s time to let it go,” she sings to kick off the song.

Without Hemsworth by her side for the first time in a long time, Cyrus relied on close friend Kaitlynn Carter for inspiration and comfort through what had to be an emotional night. Carter was in fact spotted backstage during Cyrus’ performance and some outlets such as Page Six say they even shared a kiss. After the show, Page Six also reported that the two were spotted at a Manhattan nightclub, holding hands and looking relaxed, content and happy.

And in the end, that’s all that matters.
