Beloved “Moonstruck” and “Do the Right Thing” Actor Danny Aiello Dead at the Age of 86

Do the Right Thing actor Danny Aiello is dead at the age of 86.

According to The Hollywood Reporter , the Oscar-nominated actor passed away Thursday (Dec. 12) in New Jersey after a very brief illness. Soon after news broke of his death, social media became flooded with accolades for the actor, who also was known for his work in MoonstruckThe Godfather: Part II, Hudson Hawk and Jacob’s Ladder. 

“Damn, I’m so sad to hear the great Danny Aiello has passed away,” fellow actor Michael Rapaport said in a tweet. “So, so sad. Such a great actor. Huge inspiration for me personally. Damn.”

“From Johnny in Moonstruck to Sal in Do The Right Thing,” actor Billy Baldwin also wrote on Twitter. “That smile, that laugh, that NY attitude.They don’t make ‘em like Danny anymore. What a talent… a true one of a kind.”

Aiello was also known for his work on the stage, finding himself on Broadway for plays such as Gemini, The Floating Light Bulb and The House of Blue Leaves. He also acted in television shows including Lady Blue and The Last Don.

Heck, he even played the father in Madonna’s music video for “Papa Don’t Preach” in 1986.

The actor is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Sandy Cohen. Aiello was also the father of three children. One of his children, Danny Aiello III, died of cancer in 2010.
