Actor Ben Affleck has seen his share of painful storylines, both in real life and on the screen. But his very real battle with alcoholism just might be his most painful yet.
“I started to drink every day,” Affleck says in a new interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer. “I mean, I’d come home from work and I’d start to drink. And then I’d just sit there and drink till I pass out on the couch.”
Problems with alcohol does in fact run in Affleck’s family, including his very own father.
“He was drunk every day and that was just life,” Affleck recalls. “And that was what it was. And as that got worse, that was really, really painful. And I always said, ‘That’ll never be me. I am never gonna do that.'”
But unfortunately, Affleck is continuing to deal with alcoholism, having gone to rehab twice in the last three years and ultimately letting it lead to his divorce from actress Jennifer Garner.
“I never thought I was gonna get divorced,” the Oscar winning actor says. “I didn’t wanna be a divorced person. I really didn’t wanna be a split family with my children — and it upset me because it meant I wasn’t who I thought I was. And that was so painful and so disappointing.”
But now, Affleck says he’s doing his very best to get better.
“I took the last half of the year off,” says Affleck, who plays the role of an alcoholic in the new movie The Way Back. “And I just got to be dad. Drive ’em to school, pick ’em up. Go to the swim meet. That’s where you get to be the parent. And that’s the joy of it. And that’s what I don’t wanna miss.”
