Brad Pitt Opens Up About Getting Sober Following Split with Angelina Jolie

From the looks of Brad Pitt, the acclaimed actor has always had a firm grip of reality. But back in 2016, he was losing that grip…and fast.

“I had taken things as far as I could take it, so I removed my drinking privileges,” Pitt tells The New York Times about joining Alcoholics Anonymous for a year and a half following his divorce to Angelina Jolie. “You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard. It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”

In fact, Pitt says that the group allowed him to feel quite safe while being completely vulnerable.

“It was actually really freeing just to expose the ugly sides of yourself,” Pitt shares. “There’s great value in that.”

Indeed, feeling this pain not only helped the father of six personally, but also professionally.

“The fact is, we all carry pain, grief and loss,” says Pitt, who will star in the upcoming science fiction adventure film Ad Astra, playing the role of astronaut Roy McBride. “We spend most of our time hiding it, but it’s there, it’s in you. So you open up those boxes.”
