Nicole Kidman Says Marriage to Tom Cruise Protected Her From Hollywood Sexual Harassment

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban are one of our favorite power couples in Hollywood— but, many likely forget that Kidman was once married to actor Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001.

Since their split, Nicole Kidman has stayed relatively quiet about her marriage to Cruise— but in an interview with Today’s Savannah Guthrie and Hoda Kotb about her new movie “Boy Erased,” she opened up about her marriage and how she believed it kept her from being sexually harassed.

“Because I was married at 23 years old, I wasn’t going to parties or I wasn’t going out a lot,” she told Savannah and Hoda. “I was pretty much at home. I had my first child at 25 and I was a married — I was in a family. So my sense of being in the world was — I was working, or I was at home.”

Though their marriage didn’t work out, Nicole says she and Tom were in love— but, she also firmly believes being married to a powerful man in Hollywood saved her from being harassed by other industry leaders.

“I married for love, but being married to an extremely powerful man kept me from being sexually harassed. When I say ‘protection’ there is almost like a barrier,” she said. “A lot of women don’t have that. A lot of people in the world don’t have that. But I also don’t like discussing exes and all of that … I feel it’s almost disrespectful … to Tom and disrespectful to Keith. So I try to stay in the here and now.”

Nicole and Tom had two children together, Connor and Isabella Jane. She married Keith Urban in 2006 and had two more children, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.

Nicole’s new movie “Boy Erased” hits theaters on November 2.
