Fans of the epic movie series Star Wars are mourning the death of Peter Mayhew. The actor, who played the lovable character of Wookiee Chewbacca, died Tuesday (April 30) in his North Texas home.

“The family of Peter Mayhew, with deep love and sadness, regrets to share the news that Peter has passed away,” a message posted on his Twitter page on Thursday (May 2) read. “He left us the evening of April 30, 2019 with his family by his side in his North Texas home.”

Mayhew had undergone spinal surgery back in July of last year to help combat mobility issues that he was experiencing. Shortly after his death was announced, social media quickly filled with accolades for the late actors. But perhaps some of the most heartfelt messages came from his beloved Star Wars co-stars, including Mark Hamill.

“He was the gentlest of giants,” wrote Hamill, who is known best for his role as Luke Skywalker on Star Wars. “A big man with an even bigger heart who never failed to make me smile & a loyal friend who I loved dearly. I’m grateful for the memories we shared & I’m a better man for just having known him. Thanks Pete.”

We send our prayers to all those that mourn Mayhew’s death.
