James Corden Opens Up About Emergency Eye Surgery: ‘I Couldn’t Open Either of My Eyes”

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has left many people with time to do all of those things that they have been putting off, including a certain Mr. James Corden.

On Wednesday (May 27,) the much-loved late night talk show host virtually headed to The Ellen DeGeneres Show to open up about his recent emergency eye surgery. Come to find out that Corden has been battling some occasional eye problems since suffering an injury back in 2012.

” In twenty twelve I was doing a play in New York and I used to do this bit in the play where I would hit myself in the head with a trash can lid. One night during the play I injured my eye,” James said. “Not really badly but I had to go see a doctor. He said, ‘look over time it will heal.’ And it did.”

“For some reason, about a year ago, it flared up again — this little sort of scratch on my eyeball — so I’ve been seeing doctors a lot,” he explained. “I’ve been looking after it and looking after it. About a few weeks ago, three weeks ago or something like that, I woke up and I couldn’t open my eye, which meant I couldn’t open either of my eyes. It just hurt.”

In April, Corden was forced to postpone filming of The Late Late Show with James Corden in order to get the surgery done sooner than later.

“The doctor I’ve been speaking with said, ‘Look, I think we have to sort this out. I think this has been happening too many times,’ ” Corden said. “He took one look at my eye, and he said, ‘We’re gonna operate on it now.’ And I said, ‘But I’ve got a show at 5 p.m.’ And he said, ‘No, you don’t.’ He said, ‘You don’t have a show ’til the earliest next week. You’ve got to do this right now.’
