Held just a few short weeks following the sudden death of the legendary Kobe Bryant, the 2020 NBA All-Star Game was sure to be an emotional one. Yet, fans didn’t know how emotional it would be…until vocalist Jennifer Hudson walked out on the stage.
The Chicago native, dressed in purple in honor for the former Los Angeles Lakers player, performed a stirring version of “For All We Know” as images of Bryant flashed up on the screen behind her. In the audience, the camera panned on NBA fans visibly shaken by the poignant nature of the lyrics, and the ongoing sadness surrounding the loss of Bryant, his daughter Gianna and the seven other victims who died in a California helicopter crash back on January 26.
The performance was just one of the many that was featured during this year’s All-Star game. Other performers included Chance the Rapper, DJ Khaled, Quavo and Lil Wayne.
Common also was on hand to follow-up Hudson’s dynamic performance with a spoken word performance that also touched on Bryant’s legacy. “He used his game to touch the world’s soul,” Common said. “A king named Kobe Bryant who wore purple and gold.”
