Bad news for fans of the Amazon series Homecoming. The star of the show, Julia Roberts, will not be returning in front of the camera for a second season.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Julia’s deal for Homecoming —her first TV series regular role — was for a one-season commitment based purely on the Amazon drama’s creative storyline. However, Julia will remain with the show as Executive Producer, you just won’t see her face on your screen.
The drama series stars Roberts as Heidi, a caseworker at a secret government facility. Homecoming was based on the podcast of the same name created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg.
“We’ve deviated from very much of the podcast, so [season two of] the podcast doesn’t really have anything to do with the way the show is going,” Sam Esmail told THR. “We’re working on a second season, but we have a very different trajectory for our show. I think when I signed on, I had only listened to the first six episodes of the podcast, which is the first season, and then from there we deviated completely. The show starts out fairly close to the podcast, and in the back half of the season we really start to see the major shifts and differences from the podcast.”
As of now, there is no word on whether cast members, Stephan James, Bobby Cannavale, Shea Whigham, Alex Karpovsky and Sissy Spacek, will return or if there will be more upheaval among the show’s cast.
The show is off to a good start, with Roberts, garnering nods at the Golden Globe Awards. The series earned nominations for Best Television Series—Drama, Julia Roberts received nomination for Best Actress – Drama Television Series and Stephen James received a nomination for Best Actor – Drama Television Series.
