Oprah Winfrey has always been a powerhouse. Yet recently, pneumonia proved too powerful for Winfrey to overcome.
“I thought I had a cold, but it wasn’t a cold,” she told Ellen DeGeneres Monday (Sept. 23) on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “I ended up in the emergency room, and they said, ‘You have pneumonia.’ And I go home with pneumonia, and pneumonia’s nothing to play with y’all. It’s very serious.”
Indeed, Winfrey ended up having to see a lung specialist, who put her on a very strict schedule in the hopes of getting her better.
“I never cancel anything; I work all the time when I’m sick!” she said. “He goes, ‘You must cancel everything, you cannot fly for a month.’”
Luckily, his treatment did have Winfrey feeling better, with the media mogul telling DeGeneres that she just recently was medically cleared to get back to work.
“When I walked in and I was better, he thanked me three times for getting better, and said, ‘Can I have a hug?’ and I could tell that he was like, ‘Not on my watch is this going to happen,’” she said.

Winfrey is so much better now that she is already making some big plans for 2020, as she will head out on her very own 2020 Vision Tour.
“I’m trying to motivate people to take care of themselves and not get pneumonia,” the 65-year-old joked.
