KJ Apa, who plays Archie on the CW’s Riverdale, lost not only a co-star but a friend, mentor and second dad when his TV dad Luke Perry died of a stroke earlier this year. The 21-year-old hasn’t said much about Luke’s death except in an Instagram post, which shared a photo of Luke and a caption that read, “Rest in Love bro.”
“He’s just in complete and utter peace in that photo,” KJ shared with Jimmy Fallon about his photo. KJ appeared on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote the last few episodes of Riverdale this season. While there, he was able to speak about his friend Luke Perry and what he meant to him.
“It’s not everyday that you come across a guy like Luke,” KJ said.”Luke is the kind of person who did everything he can, whoever you are, no matter how big or small you are, to make you feel comfortable and feel welcome. It’s hard to put into words how that makes me feel.”
He went on to share their relationship on the show. Luke played Fred Andrews, Archie’s dad. “We had a really close relationship. He would call my parents every week and keep them updated on how I’m going. If I had a cold or something like that he would be like, ‘I took some Gatorade to his apartment the other day. Him and my dad were always texting each other and stuff. He made such a huge effort from the very beginning. I wish I could be like that.”
“You can you can be like that,” Jimmy responded. “You are like that.”
Riverdale airs on Wednesday’s at 8pm on the CW.
