It is no secret that President Trump watches a lot of TV. He is a ratings hawk who praises big numbers in shows he likes and uses poor viewership as a criticism. “Roseanne” premiered this week, starring Roseanne Barr as a Trump supporter, to unexpectedly high ratings. It was no surprise that the President would appreciate the support, but it was a shock to learn that he personally called Barr to congratulate her on her premier’s success.
I am so greatful to the fans of the Roseanne show for giving it a good Premiere rating. You are all wonderful-here is to making America laugh & talk again! LOVE U

According to the New York Times, “Mr. Trump called Ms. Barr to congratulate her on the revival of her comedy, “Roseanne,” and to thank her for her support… The president, an obsessive about how TV shows perform, was enthralled by the ‘huge’ ratings ‘Roseanne’ had received, said a person familiar with the call.”
The call was confirmed by White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

The true test of “Roseanne” will be how it performs over the course of its season. If it can keep up these ratings, it will be interesting to see who the show is really striking a nerve with. It has already divided fans due to its politics, but still claims it is a show for everyone.
