Gianna Bryant should be here to celebrate her 14thbirthday.

She should have woken up to decorations and well wishes. She should have had presents to open and candles to blow out. She should have been surrounded by the love of family and friends throughout the entire day, and when she laid her head on the pillow that night, she should have smiled and thought about how lucky she is to live this life.

But all of those possibilities were taken away from Gianna on January 26, when she, her father Kobe Bryant and seven others lost their lives in a helicopter crash on the way to a basketball game.

So on Friday (May 1,) Gianna’s dear mother Vanessa had nothing else she could do but share her feelings for her late daughter in a heart wrenching Instagram post.

“Happy 14th Birthday to my sweet baby girl, Gianna,” Vanessa Bryant wrote alongside a picture of her daughter during happier times. “Mommy loves you more than I can ever show you. You are part of MY SOUL forever. I miss you so much everyday. I wish I could wake up and have you here with me. I miss your smile, your hugs and your giggles. I miss EVERYTHING about YOU, Gigi. I LOVE YOU so much!!!!!!!”

She later shared a photos of a red bracelet that read Gigi Bryant (heart) Mambacita explaining that “Gianna loved to wear a red bow in all of her school pictures. Red means love and life. To commemorate Gigi’s birthday today, please consider wearing red, caption an act of kindness or show how you will play Gigi’s way since she always gave everything she did her all and led with kindness. ❤️”

She went on to add, “Please use the hashtag #PlayGigisWay ❤️Thank you. 5-1-06 Mambacita (We are in the process of making this bracelet available for proceeds to benefit our Mamba and Mambacita foundation. I will update you with a post when we have them available for purchase).”

In the months following her untimely death, Gianna has been honored in many ways. Yet, perhaps the most special to her would have been the fact that in April, the WNBA included her and her fallen teammates  Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester as honorary draft selections.
