Whoopi Goldberg Returns to “The View” For First Time Since Major Health Scare

Whoopi Goldberg has been battling pneumonia that almost took her life. The talk show host shared her health update with a a video from “The View” earlier this week, where she had been absent from her chair for a long recovery.

“I am here,” she revealed in the video. “I am up and moving around, not as fast as I’d like to be. I’m OK. I’m not dead,” Whoopi began the video. “Here’s what happened. I had pneumonia and I was septic—pneumonia in both lungs, which meant there was fluid and there was all kinds of stuff going on. And yes, I came very very close to leaving the earth. Good news, I didn’t.”

For the first time since she took ill, Whoopi returned to “The View” for a surprise visit on Thursday (March 14) and the audience and her co-hosts went wild. Not only was the audience shocked by Whoopi’s appearance, co-hosts Joy Behar, Sunny Hostin, Abby Huntsman and Meghan McCain were equally as shocked.

Whoopi appeared from behind the scenes and the audience went wild chanting “Whoopi, Whoopi, Whoopi.” The ladies jumped to their feet to rush over and hug her before having Whoopi sit back down at the table.

“We are shocked,” Joy said.

“This is my first foray out. I’m not there yet, I know that. But the only way it’s going to get better is if I begin, so this is my beginning,” Whoopi said. “Makeup helps. I still have a cough and that’s the last thing to go apparently. Over the next week and a half I will start to be here more often. I wanted the first foray to be to come see y’all because I really kinda missed y’all.”

But the 63-year-old did not lose her witty sense of humor while she was gone. When Joy mentioned that it looked like she lost weight, Whoopi didn’t hold back.

“I am the only person who can go into the hospital for three weeks and put weight on,” she laughed.

Then the Oscar winning actress proceeded to reveal the seriousness of her illness.

“There’s death and here’s me, that’s how it was,” she added. “You think you can push through because you got a little cold, you say, ‘I’m just gonna keep going, keep going.’ And you think because you’ve healed quickly before that something crazy can’t happen. Well, it can,” she said. “I had double pneumonia and sepsis… and so they had to pump a lot of stuff out of me. This is a cautionary tale for all of us. You must really take care of yourself because there is little tiny stuff out there that will kill you that you never think of.”

We’re glad to see Whoopi is on the mend.
